What is your ONE WORD?

It is still January (just barely) and I continue thinking about the resolutions and how to ensure that they are actually successful.

Apparently, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail sometime by the second week of February – I would very much like to avoid being that statistics and I wish the same for my clients. So, it is important for me to get down to the bottom of it and try to find a recipe for success. Today’s blog will shed some light on one aspect, something I have been experimenting with myself recently. Judging by the trending posts online, I am not the only one.....

So, without further ado, let me introduce you to the concept of defining for yourself ONE WORD for the New Year, which should summarise what you would like the next 12 months to be about. The idea is that by focusing on this one word, you should be able to more effortlessly create positive life changes and achieve your goals without the usual baggage associated with New Year’s resolutions.

Indeed, resolution is a bit of a harsh word, one that does not leave much room for failure, so there is a lot of weight/pressure we place on it. The ONE WORD strategy is a different way of approaching setting the goals, or more importantly setting the right mindset to make some changes in the New Year.

This might be worth trying, especially if you made the same resolution year after year – I think most of us (myself included) could be in this category.

Intrigued? Let me explain how it works. Start by thinking about things you want to achieve this year – you can start by writing a list where you put everything that comes to your mind. Then, go over the list and edit. Try to be realistic and kind to yourself. Also, make sure that what you think you need to achieve really aligns with your future vision of yourself, i.e. how you want to evolve. So, for example, if you cannot picture yourself as a gym person and going to the gym has absolutely no appeal to you, then setting a goal of going to work out in the gym three times a week actually sounds like a torture and I would be very surprised if you manage to stick to it.

After all the soul searching, pick a word - the ONE WORD. It does not need to be perfect and there is probably more than one possibility but finally pick the one that really resonates with you and the one that encompasses what you desire the new year to be about. Then, spend some time playing with this word – what it means for you and, more importantly, what mindset you need to have for this word to be realised. Write it down, put it where you can see it often, use it as a mantra throughout your day, evaluate your choices and make decisions with this word in mind. Be loud and clear that your New Year is about this ONE WORD – with yourself, first and foremost, but feel free to also share it with your family and friends.

My ONE WORD for this year is CREATE. What is yours? Please share in the comments – I would really love to know what word you choose.
