It’s Christmas Time!

It is again this time of the year….As everything in 2020, it is not going to be the usual Christmas as we know it. Many of us made a choice of not travelling and spending it with family this year to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Even when we are spending it with family, after taking all possible precautions, we need to limit the number of people we are going to see. It is not easy but this is what we need to do to make sure everybody is safe.

No matter what your circumstances, it is a good time to slow down and give yourself some quiet time to reflect on the past months. When you do that, be honest with yourself but also compassionate. This year despite its many challenges, or maybe because of them?, made us all change our ways, adapt to new circumstances, and – yes – grow as individuals. It may not be so obvious at the first sight and many of us would like to erase this year all together but on the hindsight, it is the challenging times that make us grow the most. In the uncomfortable circumstances, we learn to find comfort….

If you don’t know where to start, set aside an uninterrupted 45 mins for this exercise. Find a quiet, comfortable place, make yourself a cup of tea or coffee and have a notebook ready. You may find that this exercise is easier if you first relax - do a few breathing exercises, meditate or go for a walk.

Start by writing all the things you are grateful for that happened in 2020. It may be difficult at first but once you start it will get easier. We all have plenty of things to be grateful for in our lives but some of us are not used to seeing and acknowledging them. As with everything, gratitude requires some practice – so flex your gratitude muscle. On a side note, people that practice daily gratitude practice, are generally more happy in their lives. So, if you are looking for some good New year resolutions, that would be a great one to add to your daily routine.

Then move onto the lessons of the year – what has worked well and what not so great. Are there some things you want to stop doing, some relationships you need to let go, some thoughts that hold you back, etc. In short, what is no longer serving you? This is an important point, so take your time to reflect on these questions. We can only grow and improve if we properly diagnose where we are at this starting point of our future.

Now that you have completed this part, move onto the next year. Visualise where you want to be, how you want to feel, who do you want to be with at the end of this year. And then set some priorities for yourself. What do you need more of in this new year? Remember that the areas of our lives where we spend our time and energy are the ones that flourish. You may reflect separately on your private life, work, health, etc.

When setting your goals, be realistic and concrete (aka SMART)! If you would like to be more active next year, it is not enough to just state it as a goal. Chances are nothing is going to change. Instead, make a realistic goal and an action plan on how you are going to implement it. So, for example, I could say that I am going to work out twice a week (i.e. Tue and Thu) by joining online classes that my local gym offers. Or, there are plenty of free resources online. If I were to use these, I would do some research and commit to doing specific videos/classes that I like. Make sure you are clear on how often you want to work out, on what days - then, schedule it in your calendar.

And finally, let me take this opportunity to wish you peaceful Christmas with plenty of time to slow down and reflect on your life. Take it as an opportunity to become an even better version of yourself, which is exactly what the universe needs.
